Description

Spanish Flan is a creamy and delicious dessert that is loved for its smooth texture and rich caramel flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 can (12 ounces) evaporated milk
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Place a 9-inch round baking dish inside a larger roasting pan and set aside.
  3. In a small saucepan, combine the sugar and water over medium heat.
  4. Stir occasionally until the sugar dissolves, about 3-5 minutes.
  5. Continue to cook without stirring, swirling the pan occasionally, until the mixture turns a golden caramel color, about 10 minutes.
  6. Quickly pour the caramel into the bottom of the baking dish and tilt the dish to evenly coat the bottom with caramel.
  7. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, vanilla extract, and salt until well combined.
  8. Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into another bowl to ensure a smooth texture.
  9. Pour the strained mixture over the caramel in the baking dish.
  10. Place the roasting pan with the baking dish inside in the oven and carefully pour hot water into the roasting pan to reach halfway up the sides of the baking dish.
  11. Bake for about 60-70 minutes, or until the flan is set around the edges but slightly jiggly in the center.
  12. Remove the roasting pan from the oven and let the flan cool in the water bath for 1 hour.
  13. Carefully remove the baking dish from the water bath, cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight.
  14. To unmold the flan, run a knife around the edges to loosen it.
  15. Place a serving dish on top of the baking dish and quickly invert to release the flan onto the serving dish.
  16. Slice and serve the Spanish flan chilled. Enjoy!

Notes

  • For best results, refrigerate the flan overnight before serving.
  • Ensure the caramel is not burnt for a better flavor.
  • Serve with fresh fruit or whipped cream for added flavor.
